Unsettling images reveal what back to school looks like around the world

As South Africa begins to reopen schools this month, Parent24 takes a look at what the return to schooling in the era of Covid-19 looks like around the world.

And while it is important that schools get back to teaching, the images can be unsettling. 

The carefree days of playing with friends and closely engaging with educators are behind us, and carefully managed physical distancing, in addition to sterile and sanitised classrooms, and students in masks and gloves are the norm for now.

About 57,800 students in their final year from 121 high and vocational schools returned to campus on Wednesday in Wuhan, the city previously hard hit by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Of the usual 224 students only 26 were able to attend this day due to the new rules to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

France is beginning to ease its nationwide lockdown imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19, which has killed more than 27,000 people in the country.

Italy was the first country to impose a nationwide lockdown to stem the transmission of the Coronavirus (Covid-19), but this project by the Borgosesia maYor aims to open schools with the correct safety measures.

Churches in Italy are set to reopen for the faithful to attend public Mass, in limited numbers and under strict guidelines, on May 18 for the first time since March 8.

All elementary schools have reopened on Monday now that the Dutch government has eased the lockdown regulations that kept all schools closed for the last eight weeks.

Portugal has started a second phase to ease lockdown with new measures like the reopening of nurseries, high school classes and the reopening of some street shops, cafes, restaurants, museums and monuments.
