Find out if your child is as smart as these child prodigy's.

If you caught Carte Blanche this past Sunday, you may have seen their feature on child geniuses in South Africa.

The segment included some of the top young minds across the country including Sibahle Zwane, the boy genius you may have seen on News24, calculating impossibly large figures all in his head.

Inspired, we take a closer look at Sibahle Zwane and other genius children from around the world.

The Human Calculator

You may recognise Sibahle Zwane as the young boy from Soweto who wowed onlookers with his ability to calculate large sums in his head without a moment's pause.

News24 featured the grade 4 learner who has since been at the receiving end of major support, the biggest being a scholarship to the independent Curro Academy. He'll begin grade 5 there next year. We look forward to seeing great things from the 10-year-old.

The 8-year-old coding master

When he was 4, the Yees learned that their son Seth had an IQ of 134 (genius IQ levels start from 140) and was certified 'gifted' on the Stanford-Binet 5 Intelligence scale, a level of intelligence achieved by only 1% of children in the world.

He was so smart that his parents moved entire continents in order to keep up with his growing intellect, moving from Singapore to Australia so that Seth could attend a school better able to nurture his exceptional abilities.

Today, the 8-year-old has taught himself three coding languages (Arduino, JavaScript and Python), crafted his own computer programmes and is currently working on programming his own AI.

The divinely inspired artist

Akiane Kramarik was barely school-going age when she started shocking her parents with the images she was able to sketch.

Entirely self-taught, and with no artistic family member to aspire to, Akiane has named God as the source of her talents, surprising even her parents with her seemingly otherworldly creativity.

By 8 she moved from pencil to oil and canvas, and today the home-schooled 13-year-old spends up to 5 hours each day working on her art.

The critically acclaimed artist has produced over 100 paintings, selling up to 50 prints a month at a minimum of $1800 each.

But what makes a child gifted?

Every parent likes to believe that their child is exceptional and yes, that first word or step is amazing, but it doesn't mean that your child is a genius.

The IQ number game

There are many factors to what makes a child "above average". It could be a high IQ which ranges from mildly gifted (IQ of 115 to 129) to profoundly gifted (IQ of 180 and up). The average person has an IQ of between 85 and 115.

Your kid has talent

Being exceptionally talented in a particular skill or talent is another form of gifted. Reading, music or amazing artistic skills could see your child in a gifted program.

Top score!

Academic prowess is not always a sign of a gifted child but often they are considered high achievers. If your child has never scored less than 95% on an achievement test, there's a good chance you have a little genuis on your hands.

Here are more characteristics of those kids considered to be gifted:

  • Reasons well (good thinker)
  • Learns rapidly
  • Has extensive vocabulary
  • Has an excellent memory
  • Has a long attention span (if interested)
  • Sensitive (feelings hurt easily)
