When Princess Eugenie announced the first name of her newborn son it may not have immediately clicked as a name typically associated with the British Monarchy.

But according to reports, August is a throwback to Eugenie's fourth great-grandfather, Prince Franz August Karl Albert Emanuel and of course no prizes as to who the new arrivals second name, Philip, is in honour of.

"We wanted to introduce you to August Philip Hawke Brooksbank," the princess captioned the first photo introducing her baby boy to the world.

The meaning of the name 'great' or 'magnificent' in Latin may also have played a role in the royal couple's choice.

Coincidentally, August is also the name American singer Mandy Moore chose for her newborn son. August Harrison Goldsmith was born a few days after the royal and has already been given a cute nickname by his mom.

"Gus is here. Our sweet boy, August Harrison Goldsmith. He was punctual and arrived right on his due date, much to the delight of his parents," the new mom captioned this adorable image.

Whether or not the first time moms have started a baby name trend remains to be seen, but the name is currently an uncommon one, and according to Popsugar, the name August has featured in the "top 1,000 names of the year" since 1900 in the US.

"Most recently, in 2019, August was the 167th most popular name for boys," the website reports.

And if uncommon names in the "top 1,000" sounds like great inspiration for your next child's name, check out the other "less-commonly-used names" Popsugar listed as top choices for boys in 2021.
