They say you become a mother the instant you see those two lines on the pregnancy stick. And the same goes for dads. As a woman taking that test though, it's nerve wrecking. You awkwardly pee on a stick and sit there waiting in anticipation, willing that second line to appear.
Sometimes your husband is right there with you and you enjoy the moment together. But the more fun thing to do is to tell them in a special way. We at Parent24 are suckers for an emotional pregnancy reveal and this Dove ad really hits you with all the emotions:
With Father's Day coming up this was a sweet way to show how even though moms are the ones who physically grow the baby, feel all the little movements and tend to bond with the baby more before birth, that dads are just as capable of being emotionally invested in the little one.
Dove uses the tagline "Real strength means showing you care", which I suppose is challenging the concept of "real men don't cry". Since becoming a mother and watching my friends become parents I think that the concept of the strict dad who shows no emotion and doesn't support if wife during pregnancy is changing. It's such a caricature of what fatherhood today is like.
The dads I know are present and involved. I hate the term "hands-on" dad because it implies that dads are only there to help when mom can't get around to something. Mothers and fathers are partners in this parenting thing, equal halves supporting each other through the dream and also nightmare that is parenthood. Dads who look after their kids aren't babysitting. They're simply looking after their kids. The concept of the stay-at-home dad is getting less eyebrow raises than it used to.
