The response I usually get when I tell people we’re expecting a boy is “Your husband must be SO happy!” Um, what about me? I’m pretty happy to be having a son first. I always wanted an older brother instead of a younger one. So I’m pretty happy that my other children will have a boeta to look up to and be around to protect them.
But what is it about the notion that men want sons and women want daughters that’s so heavily ingrained into people’s subconscious? When I mentioned this to my husband, he said the next time anyone asked I should say, “No, he’s actually quite disappointed, he wanted a daughter”, just to throw them off.
Is it that it’s assumed men want a son to carry on the family name? That’s okay; he has nephews that fulfil that role. Is it assumed that women just want a little doll to dress up? Have you seen the boys’ clothes lately? They’re super cute.
I don’t know what it is; my husband assures me that he would’ve been equally as happy if we were having a girl. I was the one with the preference but also would not have been disappointed had it turned out we were welcoming a daughter. I’ve waited three years for this miracle to arrive and all I want is for him to be healthy with all ten fingers and toes.
