Exercising in pregnancy is essential for you and your baby

In June 2012, the first Official South African guidelines to exercising in pregnancy were published in the South African Sports Medicine Journal.

Dr Etti Barsky, sports physician and Training Director of Preggi Bellies South Africa, was the lead author of these guidelines which states that “in the absence of any medical or obstetric contra-indications, pregnant women should exercise on most if not all days of the week”.

It has been shown that exercise has many benefits for both you and your baby. Some of the benefits include:-
  • Decreased maternal weight gain
  • Better than average placental growth improving supply of glucose and oxygen to the baby

  • Easier, shorter and less complicated labour, research showing:
  •       35% decrease in the need for pain relief
  •       75% decrease in the incidence of maternal exhaustion
  •       50% decrease in the need to artificially rupture the membranes
  •       50% decrease in the need to either induce or stimulate labour
  •       50% decrease in the need to intervene due to abnormalities in fetal heart rate
  •       55% decrease in the need for episiotomy
  •       75% decrease in the need for operative intervention
  • Improved rate of recovery post birth regardless if you’ve delivered vaginally or Caesar.
  • Improved aspects of growth and development post birth…. improved neuro development at birth and through the first 5 years of life
  • Weight bearing exercises help with improving bone density
