While your baby’s in the womb, the placenta, attached to your uterine wall, functions as a respiratory organ for your baby, also transferring essential nutrients to your baby. It’s important for both the development and survival of your little one in the womb and some women believe, even after birth, it’s incredibly nutritious... for them too.
So you may have heard of women either cooking up the placenta in a delicious pasta dish, or using the practice of placentophagy: have a professional cook prepare and dry out your placenta to be made into capsules.
Eating the placenta, in whichever form, is thought to replenish a mom's depleted iron levels after so much blood loss at birth, as well as help with postnatal depression, as the placenta contains your own essential nutrients your body needs.
Chrissy Teigen is the latest celeb mom to come out and say she believes in the practice of eating the placenta. The mom told Rita Braver for Sunday’s Best: Celebrating 40 Years of CBS Sunday Morning, that she believes the practice has helped her avoid postnatal depression with her son, Miles, especially since she had PND with her first child, Luna. She thinks there’s actually nothing wrong with the idea of eating the placenta, she added.
So when Rita commented, “I don’t think I can have you eating your placenta on prime time,” Chrissy responded, “Really? That’s not a normal thing? I’m in L.A., it’s very normal.”
So normal, in fact, for so many Hollywood moms, including Nikki Reid and Kim Kardashian, that she continued, “They grill it here. You can try some of mine.”
