When you take a pregnancy test, you want to be the first one to know the result, right?

Blind people often find challenges when it comes to that, as there are no pregnancy tests designed with their needs in mind.

Blind and partially sighted women have no choice but to involve other people in reading their pregnancy results, meaning their private news is made public news.

"It's definitely not right that there's no accessible pregnancy test for people with visual impairments," says a woman in the video (above), while another adds, "I should be the first one to know."

To address this challenge British designers built a prototype pregnancy test that communicates the results via a tactile pad, rather than a digital display.

How does it work?

According to the video, the user initiates the device when the urine is absorbed. An engine is activated, and a component is pushed through to the top should the result be positive.

So the prototype test produces a large raised button to indicate a positive result, so women can feel their results with their fingers.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People, a UK charity behind the prototype, is calling upon commercial designers to reimagine the test, so that no one should have to sacrifice their privacy because of inaccessible design.
