Parenting like a celebrity

Celebrities may be public figures who live seemingly exciting and successful lives but when it comes to parenting they face the same challenges as any other parent. This is how some of them view parenting:

1. Get your sleep

“Girl, get your sleep!... It goes so fast…Next thing you know, she's going to be walking."
American singer Jennifer Hudson’s advice to fellow American singer, Beyonce.

2. You’ll need lots of love

“In spite of the six thousand manuals on child raising in the bookstores, child raising is still a dark continent and no one really knows anything. You just need a lot of love and luck - and, of course, courage.” - Bill Cosby, Comedian Fatherhood

3. Parenting comes first

“When I go home, she (my wife) wants me to be a good father and a good husband. And everything else is secondary to that.” - Barack Obama, US President

4. It takes a lot of time

"I can't comment on other people's parenting but it does require a lot of time and effort and paying attention." Madonna (American singer)

5. Don’t take them for granted

“My children and I have a very good relationship. We talk about everything but I never once want to take for granted how they feel or think about things.” Judith Sephuma
South African singer in DRUM Magazine

6. Your life will never be the same again

“When you have kids you do grow up.  I have just started realising it now-it changes the world, having children.” - David Beckham, UK Soccer Player

7. One day your kids may not need you

“One of life’s great ironies is that, just as we parents are getting ready to play this role (mentoring), we find ourselves no longer welcome in our children’s inner world. They are looking for affirmation from their peers and increasingly consider their parents as unwelcome intruders in this space. Their armour includes an interesting range of monosyllabic answers to our caring questions – “fine… cheers” - Helen Zille South African politician

8. Be prepared for mixed emotions

“One moment, tremendous happiness; the next, fatigue sets in, and I cried for no reason, and then that took care of itself. It’s for things like that after having a baby that mothers really need emotional support.” - Celine Dion. Canadian Singer.

9. Parenting does something to a man

I am more passionate now that I am a father. It has focused my mind on the kind of work I want to do.” - Brad Pitt, Actor

10.Your kids won’t always listen

“Even though your kids will consistently do the exact opposite of what you're telling them to do, you have to keep loving them just as much.” - Bill Cosby
