Parenting advice from a 6 year old

Earlier this year Jimmy Kimmel, whose wife was expecting a baby, got parenting advice from the best source: kids.

In one interview, he asked a 6-year-old girl to help him change a nappy and give him tips on how to handle the baby.

She was quite helpful in the beginning until she got frustrated with Jimmy acting all silly, pretending to not know what he was doing.

It's funny how kids know so much- as young as she is- she obviously took note of how her parents probably handled her younger sibling.

Using a life-size baby doll, the little girl showed Jimmy the ropes. Without struggling, she comfortably handled the doll like a real baby and even changed his nappy that was filled with chocolate.

Holding a baby

It's a good idea to teach the older brother or sister how to handle the baby for days when you need a little helper- they'll know exactly what to do.

The little girl showed Jimmy how to pick the baby up and how to hold the baby without hurting him. Picking a baby up, you have to support the baby by the neck and bum and that's exactly what she was trying to do with the doll.

Changing the nappy

Even while changing the nappy she had the right idea, she knew to lay the baby on his back and remove the nappy. Once that was done, she picked the doll up and demonstrated with wipes how to clean the baby's backside thoroughly.

When having an older child, it would be so helpful to allow them to get them involved while changing the nappy, under supervision, of course. Maybe ask them to just stand by and distract the baby while you're cleaning him or just to have them nearby to reassure them that you haven't forgotten about them. Through this, you could spend quality time with both of them.
