Surfer dad rips wave with daughter

Professional surfer Cory Lopez has a natural affinity for the water. When he became a father, he decided that a great way to play with his kids would be to take them surfing, according to Huffington Post. A video of him heading out to the waves with three-year-old Alana riding piggyback has just gone viral.

Should babies learn to swim?

Alana is now six and can surf on her own, but Cory says that he’s taken all three of his children (his youngest are four and two) for surfing sessions, and that being exposed to the sea himself as a child is what gave him a love for the ocean lifestyle.

An expert recommended that parents should only tandem surf with small kids if:

•    the parent is an experienced swimmer
•    the waves are small enough
•    the beach is known to the parent as tides, currents and terrain (rocks or reefs below the surface) can all have an impact on ocean safety.

Water babies in South Africa

In South Africa many families on the coast enjoy heading to the beach to relax or take to the waves. There are some beaches that are safer than others, though, and some where swimming is not permitted or advisable because of conditions such as occasional freak waves or strong currents. When going to the beach with children, consider using a beach that has a manned lifeguard post and don’t ignore signs that forbid swimming in certain stretches of the beach.

Swimming schools can also teach parents and children basic water safety and rescue techniques. Make sure your child knows what to do in the water (and what not to do) and how to react in an emergency. Never take risks when it comes to water safety at the beach.
