What was your favourite sweet as a kid?

Ever watched someone’s eyes glaze over when you mention the name of a chocolate bar or brand of sweets you used to enjoy? Just the powerful memory alone transports them to another place when a simple pleasure such as a sweet treat was enough to make your day.

We’re probably more cautious with what our own kids eat these days- a little wiser, nutritionally-speaking, but the humble sweet is still used to reward kids, keep them quiet when they need to be quiet and as a treat, well, just because.

Imagine, though, that the sweet treat will not only cheer them up, but will probably form part of their childhood through the memories of those textures, tastes and scents.

Some of the brands of our childhoods have disappeared completely, but a quick look at the checkout area of the supermarket will prove that many have survived.

I remember my Mum designating Saturday night as Mars Bar night. My brothers and I would each get a Mars Bar, and spend an hour nibbling the chocolate away from the mallow, or licking the melted syrupy goo off our fingers.

We had Kit Kats, which also had the “eat the chocolate off the wafer first” tradition, and countless tubes of Smarties- everybody knew that the red ones were the best. My own kids love sour worms, a rare treat for them.

What sweet treat did you enjoy the most as a kid?
