  • For those obsessive indoor trainers, conventional riding gear can be annoying.
  • These shoes are designed to be much cooler to ride – literally.
  • And they are easier to wash to and dry, too.

In the year where indoor training has become an entrenched part of cycling, brands continue to reveal new products for better riding in your living room.

Virtual cycling apps have triggered an immense technology surge in device and smart bike convergence. This has placed unique demands on cycling apparel.

With the latest smart trainers and immersive virtual riding apps allowing riders to train with huge intensity, product planners are learning that conventional cycling gear doesn’t always work best for an indoor session.

Applying peak pedalling effort on a conventional outdoor training ride generates ample cooling airflow, as rider and bike speed along. This prevents heat fatigue and the discomfort of being drenched in perspiration.

Replicating that riding intensity on your smart trainer, indoors, can be uncomfortable. Using a powerful fan to generate enhanced airflow does help, but wearing cycling gear that optimizes the available airflow, helps even more.

Some cycling apparel brands have already launched indoor specific training shorts and jerseys, with significant mesh panels to air cooling.

Influential Japanese cycling technology brand, Shimano, has now revealed its IC1 indoor training shoe.

Designed specifically for the demand of stationary bike riding, the IC1 is constructed to be much cooler than a conventional cycling shoe.

Going with the flow

Most of the IC1’s upper structure is highly breathable mesh, which keeps you cooler than a conventional shoe.

Shimano’s industrial designers have been mindful of using an appropriate mesh fabric that retains enough tension to deliver a secure fit. It uses a single loop strap, that crossed the shoe’s upper twice.

The IC1 is compatible with both two- and three-bolt cleat systems, allowing you to use either mountain bike or road pedals for your indoor training.

Finished in a simple charcoal colourway, Shimano’s IC1 indoor training shoe is available in slim fit sizes 36-41, and a slightly wider shape, sized 42-50.

If you don’t want to overuse your road or mountain bike cycling shoes for indoor training, with the burden of increased wash cycles, these new Shimano shoes are a great solution. The IC1 is also much quicker drying than a normal cycling shoe.

A clever safety feature of these indoor training shoes is the broad heel pad, delivering secure walking grip on slippery surfaces such as tiles and laminated floors.
