  • Centrally located within the Parks area.

Coffee stops are as synonymous with cycling as Strava and ……, after all what good is a bike ride without the post ritual of caffeine?

In the leafy Parks area of Johannesburg, one such popular location is Croft & Co, on Tyrone Avenue in Parkview. Originally a retailer of Mont Blanc pens and Cuban cigars the venue has grown a following within the community for good coffee and fine food.

Especially good coffee. Dark and nutty with a medium to dark roast, just right.

Family owned and run, proprietor Grant Ravenscroft and his staff ensure a warm convivial atmosphere. Owner banter with regulars is peppered with a sharp wit.

A breakfast and lunch menu is available with fresh ingredients sourced locally. Chef Anne Rich, Grant’s sister, ensures meal standards are consistent, from kitchen to table.

Proper bike parking

Layout is spacious and well ventilated with outside seating including parking for bikes. Planters complement the contemporary décor and add a sense of detachment from the outside world.

Early morning post rides are likely the busiest. A good indicator being the often filled to capacity bike racks. These are situated within easy sight, nearby the seating and under the watchful eye of staff.

Other than its popularity amongst cycling and running groups in the mornings, Croft & Co is unofficially accepted as the official club house of ICG (Illovo Cycling Group) and a motley assortment calling themselves the Troyeville Flamingoes.

The current location was only revamped and occupied just before South Africa’s level five hard lockdown. Throughout the levels, cycling groups like ICG purchased prepaid coffee vouchers and supported Croft with take away meals. Delivered by the owners themselves with a skeleton staff.

What was once described as "a cupboard of a shop" Croft & Co has established itself as a definitive part of Johannesburg cycling’s cafe culture.
