It might only have a mild presence in mountain biking, but Mongoose is a halo brand for BMX riders.
Mongoose frames were desired status symbols during the BMX peak in the 1980s. And if you were a teenage BMX rider in the 1990s, the Mongoose you wanted was a Hooligan.
The American bike brand has revived its Hooligan, with much bigger wheels than before.
A big BMX - with better rolling speed
Recognizing that retro bikes are never out of fashion, the product people at Mongoose have restyled a mountain bike frame to look like its 1990s Hooligan BMX bike.
Most BMX bikes roll on 20” wheels to deliver the ideal combination of low pedalling inertia and lots of agility. The new Mongoose Hooligan goes much bigger, with 29” wheels – like you’ll find on most mountain bikes.
What it lacks in agility, due to those huge wheels, the recreated Mongoose Hooligan compensates for with urban cool. And simplicity.
Simple and easy to service
The colourway is true to 1990s BMX aesthetic, with a blue frame, white graphics and silver hubs, stem and seat post clamp. There is a top tube pad, too.
It might have much bigger wheels than a conventional BMX, but the 2022 model year Hooligan has all the features you’d expect on a BMX. The drivetrain is singlespeed (with 25x13 gearing) and there’s only a rear disc brake.
With very little to service or go wrong, the Mongoose Hooligan 29er BMX has great potential as a functional commuter bike. All with a dash of delightful 1990s nostalgia.
