After a couple of teasers via the UCI XC World Cup, Santa Cruz has revealed its new lightweight mountain bike, the fourth-generation Blur.

Santa Cruz claims it is the lightest dual-suspension 29er mountain bike they have manufactured to date, with a frame that is 289g lighter than the previous Blur.

VPP makes way for Superlight suspension, which is a single pivot design with flex stays, a big contributor in terms of weight saving.

The Superlight suspension design is tuned for the ride characteristics demanded by modern mountain bikers. It is lightweight and efficient with ample plushness.

The carbon-fibre used for the rear triangle has been structured to have the right amount of spring force to achieve the correct balance between flex, damping and durability.

All the energy drinks - you can handle

Blur’s updated suspension layout now allows for the fitment of two water bottle cages, making it a perfect stage race weapon too. For hot local riding conditions, more water bottle carrying capacity is crucial.

Each frame size is designed with chainstays that are proportional so that riders of all lengths can benefit from the same balanced geometry.

As with modern mountain bike trends, the new Blur is longer and  has a slacker head angle, by 0.7- or 1.4° depending on the front fork travel. Variable seat tube angles ensure a better fit across all sizes.

The frame features internal cable routing ports for all components including the rear lockout and dropper seat post. A mounting point in chain stay will make using a chain retention device simple, too.

Durable in local conditions

It is great to see that designers stuck to a threaded bottom bracket design too, which is less likely to develop an annoying creak when exposed to dusty South African riding conditions.

As water bottle cages will no longer need to be fitted to the seatpost, all models are fitted with dropper seat posts.

The new Blur will be offered in XC and TR specification. The XC build features 100mm suspension front and rear, Maxxis Aspen tyres, a remote lockout, Rockshox SidLuxe shock and SidSL suspension fork.

Santa Cruz’s TR models boast 120mm of front suspension travel and 115mm at the rear. They also roll Maxxis Rekon Race tyres and riders will have the option of a Fox 34 Stepcast suspension fork, capable of dealing with more challenging descents.

Rolling the new Blur along are the lightest Reserve mountain bike rims to date. The Reserve 28XC wheels feature a shallower and wider rim bed measuring 28mm internally and weigh 385g per rim, or 1367g for a complete wheelset, with DT180 hubs, valves and tape.

There is no rider weight limit and the Blur and those 28XC rims models carry Santa Cruz’s lifetime warranty. Sizes small to extra large as well as C and CC carbon options are available.
