  • Desire three stripes for your gravel bike ride?
  • Recycled materials are a big part of this new Adidas cycling shoe
  • You can opt for a slightly more practical colour – if the bright Aqua is a bit too much

The world’s most influential activewear company has added another cycling product to its portfolio.

Although absent for many seasons, Adidas has significantly recommitted to cycling – recognizing the growth potential and diverse rider market.

The German brand’s new product is ‘The Gravel Shoe’ and it is targeted at those riders keen on a weekend bike packing adventure in the Karoo. Or cyclists who ride significant distances, on farm or district roads, for their training.

Wild and mild

Adidas is marketing its new gravel shoe range in two colour options. There is a subtle charcoal finish, which should wear better rover time, especially with frequently dust and mud exposure.

The Aqua option is brilliantly vivid in colour for those gravel riders who want a shoe that complements their more outrageous attire.

The core design echoes a sustainability principle. Adidas fabric specialists sourced new uppers for the gravel shoe, spun from 50% recycled fibres. Designers also opted for a simple lace-up closing mechanism.

Keeping the gravel out

Recognizing that gravel riders do a lot more walking off the bike than road cyclists, this new shoe doesn’t feature a carbon-fibre sole.

Its thermoplastic sole allows for greater walking comfort and is less likely to slip on wet rocks or a tiled stoep, although you will sacrifice a few watts of power loss, due to the sole’s greater flex.

The most striking element of the Adidas gravel shoe design is its pseudo ankle sock. This integrated and extended cuff might look odd, but its purpose is to keep dust and small bits of debris from getting into the shoe, when riders are pedalling on forest roads.

Adidas has sized the new gravel shoe from 4- to 14, for women, and 5- to 15, for men.
