Cape Town cycling manufacturer Ciovita is uniting fashion, form, function and community.

Its latest project showcases the works of local artists on cycling garments while at the same time aiding social development.

The first collaboration is with local Stellenbosch artist, Michelle-Lize van Wyk. Her artwork will feature on three cycling jerseys on a once-off limited run.

For riders who aren't shy about their gear

Each jersey is inspired by gorgeously coloured gemstone.

The three gems include jacinth; a fiery orange zircon associated with spiritual depth and wisdom; sapphire, frequently deep blue and beryl, often green in colour and valued for its healing properties

"My wish is for my work to strike a chord with everyone, offering insight, direction and healing, while connecting and awakening whole communities. How wonderful if our collaboration can go some way towards achieving that," says Michelle-Lize van Wyk.

Something for the cycling collector

Garments under the Ciovita X label are intended as collectables and allow cyclists to own unique artworks from local designers and artists in a functional form.

Van Wyk believes art is not something meant for a select few to enjoy. It should inspire, connect and awaken whole communities and showcasing her artwork on a cycling garment is the perfect fit for that goal.

The limited-edition Ciovita-X Michelle-Lize van Wyk jersey is based on Ciovita’s ladies cut race fit jersey.

All for a good cause

It retails for R1499, which includes a free matching casquette.

R100 of each garment sold will be donated to AITSA!, an aftercare child support group that works with pre-schoolers and aids them in completing their education right up to school leaving age.

Part of the AITSA! childhood development support strategy includes teaching these youngsters how to ride mountain bikes.
