  • A new carbon mountain bike wheel option, from the Specialized sub-brand
  • These wheels have a rim shape, that lowers your puncture risk
  • They aren't cheap, but very light, and have a lifetime guarantee

Lighter wheels make a massive difference in the way your mountain bike rides.

With less rotational mass you can climb more efficiently, suffer less fatigue on those flat gravel roads and steer the bike with greater ease and confidence, on singletrack descents.

But the truth is that fewer grams cost a lot of money. For those mountain bikers who are keen followers of theRoval wheel brand, there is good news.

After launching the incredibly light Control SL wheelset last year, Roval has now added a more affordable version.

Perfect for stage racing or trail riding

The Control SL weighs only 1240g and 24-spokes per wheel. Roval’s new Control carbon wheelset without the SL suffix is still terrifically light at 1450g, but nearly half the price. An easy way to tell these two Roval wheelsets apart is by countering their spokes, with the SL version having four less per wheel than the new Control carbons.

Only available in the more popular 29er wheel size, the Roval Control carbon wheels are targeted at cross-country and trail riding mountain bikers.

The rims are 29mm wide, with a 4mm bead, which helps to spread impact forces if you smash some rocks or roots at speed. By shaping these Control carbon rims with a broad bead, Roval’s designers have reduced the risk of pinch flats.

Spinning the Roval Controls are DT Swiss 350 hubs, with a 36t rear ratchet. These Swiss hubs have excellent engagement, converting your pedalling efforts to propulsion without wasting watts. They are also easily serviceable, without requiring special tools.

Roval recommends tyres 2.3-2.5” wide, for the Control carbon wheels. This allows riders a generous selection of rubber, with the popular new trend of 2.4” trail wide tyres being ideal.

The Roval Control carbon wheelset retails for R26 500. And in the unlikely event that you do manage to damage them? There is a lifetime warranty and a no-fault crash replacement policy, to cover your significant Roval wheelset investment.
