- Inner tubes are still important, when your tubeless tyre fails
- But bulky legacy inner tubes are uncomfortable to ride with in your pocket
- Pirelli solves all those traditional inner tube issues, with its SmarTUBE
Tubeless technology has largely eliminated the issue of flat tyres for cyclists.
With most new mountain, gravel and road bikes rolling tubeless rims and tyres, you have to worry a great deal less about avoid avoiding road debris or those sharp rocks on a mountain bike trail.
Even the best tubeless tyres aren’t infallible. Punctures do happen. Especially when you gash a sidewall, and the hole is too large for sealant to clog. The humble inner tube still has its place in any riders kit, but there is now a much smarter option, from Italy.
An old idea - with new tech
Pirelli has introduced a range of SmarTUBE products which are very yellow inner tubes made from advanced thermoplastic polyurethane, instead of traditional rubber.
Weight and portability are two of Pirelli’s product advantages. These new yellow tubes are 70% lighter than a conventional inner tube and also fold 50% smaller.
At only 35g, the Pirelli SmarTUBE for road tyre use is very light. For those road cyclists who still prefer to ride with inner tubes, using the new Pirelli will reduce rotating mass and save energy.
Mountain bike tubes for medium and large tyres
Pirelli entered the mountain bike tyre market only a few years ago and it is also offering the SmarTUBE technology for bigger casings and rougher trails. The company’s new inner tube range is available in three sizes, for mountain bikers.
Riders who need the lighter inner tube to keep air in a damaged tyre and get home safely, can select the 29×1.8/2.2” SmarTUBE. If you are more of a trail or enduro rider, there is a 29×2.2/2.6” version and Pirelli is even catering for those mountain bikers on the smaller wheel size, with a 27.5×2.2/2.6” SmarTUBE inner.
The weight rating for those mountain bike inner tubes range from 75- to 100g, which is still much lighter than an old school rubber tube.
Being prepared is a principle in avoiding frustration when riding. Even the best tubeless tyres can puncture or cut. With the convenient size and weight of Pirelli’s new SmarTUBE range, you have no excuse for not carrying a spare inner tube, in your jersey’s back pocket, on a ride.
