Bell is one of the most renowned names in cycling safety. The American helmet brand’s latest product evolution is the XR Spherical, a lightweight off-road riding helmet.

Designed to be functional and comfortable for gravel riding and mountain biking, the XR Spherical keeps you cool on a Karoo ride - or singletrack trails. 

Heat discomfort is an issue on long rides when temperatures start soaring. Bell’s industrial designers worked to shape the XR Spherical for optimal airflow. It has 18 vents and overbrow padding to keep moisture from your eyes.

Clever ergonomics 

The value of an abundance of air vents is most telling at low speeds, when climbing steep inclines and riding at higher cadence and effort.

To keep the helmet comfortably in place, is a Fidlock magnetic buckle with no-twist glides. That makes it easy to fasten and unfasten the XR Spherical one-handed.

At only 285g, this new Bell helmet is terrifically light and won’t create any neck strain on a long ride. And if you spend an entire day on the bike, in varying lighting and climate conditions, there are docking slots on the XR Spherical, to conveniently stow your eyewear.

The next generation of Swedish safety 

Beyond its strong airflow properties and low mass, the Bell XR Spherical has an impressive safety structure. It combines the vaunted MIPS slip-plane liner technology with a Spherical structure.

Swedish neurologists developed MIPS to dissipate rotation impact energy during crashes. It works by placing a sacrificial layer inside the helmet, which moves and absorbs energy during a crash – reducing acceleration of the brain. This reduces the likelihood of concussion.

Bell has taken the MIPS idea even further by constructing helmets with its Spherical technology. It joins the XR’s inner and outer shells with a moveable material layer. Think of it as a ball-and-socket design.

If you hold the XR Spherical helmet and apply force, you’ll notice it twisting in your hands. These twisting movements between the helmet’s inner and outer shells, absorb energy and reduce head injuries.

If you want a true multipurpose cycling helmet, usable on a multitude of bikes, the XR Spherical makes a lot of sense.
