Strava adds video to rival Instagram for cycling social media

Strava update included in the first week of June, listed a flood of new features. For subscribers to the world’s most used cycling activity app, 3D mapping and community insights for various trails were the most notable features.

But as with any software release, there’s always more. Beyond the data richness of Strava’s upgrade, there’s a considerable improvement in the app’s media offering.

Strava users have been posting images of their activities for years, but video has not been possible. Software engineers at Strava have now deployed a rollout to support video uploads, confirmed on Wednesday.

Half a minute playback

The navigation for Strava’s video uploads remains similar to the previous photo upload function, which has been enhanced and renamed as 'add media', covering both stills and moving images.

Playback duration is limited to 30-seconds, with Strava providing editing functions to stitch a selection of clips, into a continuous 30-second video. What happens if you upload a video longer than 30-seconds? Strava automatically trims that.

There is no formatting preference, with Strava allowing for landscape or portrait orientation videos. Strava’s latest update includes user tagging, enabling riders to tag friends and new acquaintances on activity descriptions.

The combination of video upload functionality and user tagging is a clear social media play by Strava. Adding features that users would ordinarily navigate to Instagram, for.

When will the video and user tagging be available? Strava’s deployment of these new features has commenced and is scheduled to be complete by the end of June. Most users should have access to the enhanced Strava media offering, with their next round of software updates.
