Cape Town is ground zero for riding to most South African mountain bikers. Between Table Mountain and the Boland mountains, excellent trails are abundant.
Why would you ever venture further south? I did that recently for the De Hoop Vlei MTB experience. These are the country’s most southern trails, navigating the rolling Overberg hills, east of Bredasdorp.
The event venue is De Hoop Nature Reserve, globally renowned for the splendour of its marine and coastal conservation. Having lived in Jonkershoek and ridden trails from the Cederberg to Karkloof, I am quite singletrack literate. But De Hoop and the deep Overberg have never registered on my mountain biking to-do list.
