Most competitive cycling is about speed or suffering uphill, but some of the most impressive riding – is really slow. And deliberate.

Trials riders have a sense of balance and muscle control, which is rare. It helps them to ride bicycles up and over obstacles that most would never consider as cycling terrain.

Some of the most viewed cycling edits in history, are of trials riders. Danny MacAskill, for instance.

Pat Smage has won the American trials riding championship, an astonishing twelve times. And to show just how good he is, at balancing and riding a bike, he decided to return to his roots.

You never get bored, on a farm

Raised on a farm, Pat has boundless opportunities to build trails, obstacles and evolve his skills.

As a memorial ride for his grandfather, who started the family farm back in 1949 and passed in 2017, Pat and his wife, Hannah, created an inspiring short film.

Called ‘Le Tour de Farm’, it showcases just how radical you can get with a modern gravel bike. And yes, we said ‘gravel bike’, not a mountain bike.

Although custom dirt jump or mountain bikes are preferred for off-road trials riding, Pat wanted to show the potential of a gravel bike. In the correct hands.

Pat’s choice of the Ibis Hakka MX as his trials bike, was deeply unusual. But it also makes the ‘Le Tour de Farm’ thoroughly watchable, as he takes a bike better suited to 100km Karoo gravel rides, and makes it dance all over the farm.
