Carlton Centre bomber commits suicide

2012-09-17 10:33

Johannesburg - An activist who tried to bomb the Carlton Centre in 1977 has committed suicide, The Star reported on Monday.

Issac Mohlolo Siko, 63, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head by his helper at his home in Hammanskraal on Thursday, the paper reported.

The helper was working inside the house when she heard the gunshot.

Siko's twin sister Irene said the family was struggling to understand the death as he had left no note.

"We do not know what led him to kill himself. We're still trying to come to terms with his death," she said.

Siko exploded a bomb on the morning of December 7 1977 in front of a restaurant at the Carlton Centre.

Several people were injured, including Siko who blew off his right hand.

A former student at the University of Witwatersrand, Siko was sentenced to 12 years on Robben Island for the bombing.

He told a court that he had done the bombing with the "highest patriotic motives" for the good of both his people and "for the good of white South Africans as well".

Before the Carlton Centre bombing, Siko had also bombed a surgery in Soweto, which was owned by a white doctor.

He said the bombing was intended to test the effectiveness of his bombs and to push the authorities into improving living conditions in Soweto.

Siko had recently taken early retirement as a group executive manager at the Defence Science and Technology Institute.

Literally brainless, now that he has blown his brains out.

      alexander.muller.16718979 - 2012-09-17 11:07

Hahaha... Obviously more than you @yangmanfrom.sawthafriqa

      joe.farmer.92775 - 2012-09-17 11:10

      @yang Educationless????????

      janice.mcmaster.92 - 2012-09-17 11:18

He should have bombed his head off back in 77!!!

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-09-17 11:25

Former student, probably never finsihed? Not so clever after all.

      christopher.shining - 2012-09-17 11:35

He knew what he did was wrong. So he has had a life of crappiness. Been in jail, blew off his hand, now shoots himeslf in the head, was it worth it?

      darren.king.58118 - 2012-09-17 11:37

…that was the world's longest TIKKA BOMB

      mihaip007 - 2012-09-17 11:48

@yangmanfrom.sawthafriqa - so educated, he blew his hand off! Did he know he was supposed to let go of the bomb? As about how he died, I sure hope the helper was helpful enough! Another terrorist less. Another thing - typical anc guys - the white doctor surely had a surgery in soweto to HELP the people of soweto! I am sure there was hardly any profit being made out of them..! Yet he decided to cut the branch from beneath them! EDUCATED EH? face it the anc does not give a DAMN about their own people - was true then, it is true NOW!

      mihaip007 - 2012-09-17 12:47

lerato - so according to you Osama Bin Laden was also an activist???? Also what tables do you turned? They ALREADY turned! the ANC is in power and what? what have they achieved? Other than finally reaching the same level to what the apartheid regime did? Killing poor black people??? I don;t see how the tables could turn any further....

      fussed.anderson - 2012-09-17 14:29

Again the one hand not knowing what the other is doing

      tw2066 - 2012-09-17 14:51

Activist.. Carlton Centre ... Non military target ... Don't you mean terrorist? By your interpretation, activists include Bin Laden, the Boermag, Andrew Zondi... Maybe terrorist?

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-09-17 15:15

lerato don't paint me with that white brush, i don't even like chiwahwahs... as for your tables turn comment... there is a very wise ol prophet in soweto i believe, the name evades me, he has a different theory, but hey lets not pray on bad things...shall we...want jy maak my nie bang nie!

  • oliver.lankes.3 - 2012-09-17 10:56

Why did he wait so long?

  • exile13 - 2012-09-17 10:56

@News24, he wasn't an activist, he was a terrorist; slight difference

      heinrich.kirstein - 2012-09-17 11:56

      Achmed the dead terrorist

  • yangmanfrom.sawthafriqa - 2012-09-17 10:58

Proves that ANC cadres are well educated I guess, all went to University, Mandelas,Sisulu,Buthelezi,Tambo and Mugabe too, so why you less educated hating on them. This comrade is murdered just as Chris Hani was, find that Boeremag member who got bail bring him over. He got explanation to do

      freddie.mostert.3 - 2012-09-17 11:05

What r u gonna do? Oh wait I know, ur gonna be at least 7, with pangas guns and the lot while he would be tied up! And then you gonna show him hey! Useless!

      joe.farmer.92775 - 2012-09-17 11:11

how did they get into a university if Bantu education was so bad?

      marc.schnehage - 2012-09-17 11:13

If it was a boeremag member, we'll give him a medal and hail him as a hero! Good riddance to bad rubbish!

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-09-17 11:33

The new leaders are not so educated, Mr Zuma and Malema comes to mind. To become a student is not so difficult, to pass is another story.

      freddie.mostert.3 - 2012-09-17 11:45

      christopher.shining - 2012-09-17 11:45

Manfred after nursery school you get class 1. Its never to late to enroll manfred no matter how thick you are.

      mihaip007 - 2012-09-17 12:52

yangmanfrom.sawthafriqa - I thought apartheid was BAD for you guys! It seems you could go to university during that regime! Funny in my country we scrapped for food and we could never dreamed of being at a university! I wonder how much would you have survived OUR living conditions offered by your beloved Socialist regime...!

      sandy.langenstrass - 2012-09-17 13:27

Here we go again...One News24 article...which, this time I don't wish to comment on.....but to's so childish the way the insults feels a sense of discouragement....when you see that these replies are coming from fellow country men (I'm not innocent,I've also at times got mad) but I try not to do hurtful are we ever going to have peace in this this.

      Clayton Richard Delport - 2012-09-17 15:17

Just like your great heroes, attack civilians and run when military personnel arrive, bloody coward dogs

  • arno.botha.71 - 2012-09-17 11:00

What's the deal with this guy's logic? How is a bomb good for anyone? good riddance to piece of garbage.

  • mastersvoice - 2012-09-17 11:05

He was a relic of a troubled past, obviously with a troubled mind. I suppose it must be hard for ex-terrorists to adapt to a world where their contributions are no longer acceptable to the cause.

  • magomarele - 2012-09-17 11:14

    RIP qabane.

      tw2066 - 2012-09-17 14:53

  • jacque.raymer - 2012-09-17 11:19

good riddence ... anyone willing to take the life of others no matter the motive doesnt deserve what life has to offer....

      Gcodi Mahomed - 2012-09-17 11:24

does your statement also apply to whites?

      Clayton Richard Delport - 2012-09-17 15:14

Ey Mohamed lets talk statistics then think about what you just said, does it make any sense? Obviously not, seems its easier to blame the whites instead of getting off your lazy asses and work for what you want! Ps the white were not handed jack sht they works for it, there education, there houses, there cars, there lifestyles, there children ect....

  • anthea.lagrange - 2012-09-17 11:29

He misunderstood the concept of " suicide bomber" completely

  • paula.chaplin.98 - 2012-09-17 12:15

What a lot of ugly vitriol. One experiences South Africa at its ignorant, intolerant worst in the comments section of News24. Where is the empathy and the understanding of context? I pray that this country somehow manages to rise above all of you small-minded, fear-mongering, hatred-spewing morons who work so hard to make South Africa fail.

      Anthea - 2012-09-17 12:45

You're not likely to find much empathy for a bomber I'm afraid. I have a friend who had nightmares for years after the Planet Hollywood bombing at the V&A Waterfront. Bombing civilians is not brave, not heroic. So, no, not too much sympathy there.

      merven.halo - 2012-09-17 13:51

'Where is the empathy and the understanding of context' What context? A terrorist commit suicide.

      tw2066 - 2012-09-17 14:57

Best you pray for our future under these terrorists then

  • reg.nagel - 2012-09-17 12:31

  • frans.vanderpoll - 2012-09-17 12:40

Why wasn't this 'Free/Dom fighter given a job in the Defense force or National Intelligence?

  • robert.dood.1 - 2012-09-17 12:41

Paula your comment is valid just like all the one a good idea how people ( both black and white ) feel. Maybe you should like many others blame apartheid. I was with an overseas visitor in the Carlton Hotel on the 7 Dec 1977.

  • donald.dykman - 2012-09-17 12:55

He got to the point were he realized he lost his hand for these idiots that's fkin up this country.

  • IcemanGP - 2012-09-17 13:02

I see as a former (not completed) student, and a TERRORIST BOMBER of INNOCENT civilians to boot. The cANCer looked after him well to be a group executive manager at the\r\nDefence Science and Technology\r\nInstitute. He must have ripped off so much money that he even retired early.

  • bobo.jane.1 - 2012-09-17 13:12

Good Riddance...but why didn`t he called Pienk Frikkie, and told him how he feels ? I`m sure he would have rushed to Hammanskraal and talked nicely to that bastard Terrorist.

  • truthis.tway - 2012-09-17 13:39

Good now he can burn in hell, low life coward terrorist.

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-09-17 13:43

Good now the rest of the bastards like this that are flying around the country causing havoc and killing innocent people should also have their brains blown out. I was in JHB when that took place. and still blame Mandela and Tutu for the problems they caused in those days.

  • sagin.verity - 2012-09-17 13:47

He obviously realised what a idiot he has been all is life and that what he fought for is worse than what he fought against. The embarrassment of a life wasted on the wrong cause. he and all his comrades made south africa a worse country to live in.

  • graham.horn.505 - 2012-09-17 15:08

Some serious racists here! Wishing death on others doesn't help at all. Most of us were born on this soil and we have to learn how to live together regardless of our differences and history.
