Eight die in tavern staircase collapse

Cape Town - Eight people died at a tavern in Makhaza, Khayelitsha in Cape Town, after a staircase collapsed early on Sunday morning, Western Cape police said.

“Six injured persons are between the ages of 17 and 24 years old. Of the eight victims, two died en-route to hospital when the vehicle they were transported in was involved in an accident. A culpable homicide case docket has been registered for their death,” spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said.

The eight killed were all women between the ages of 15 and 23-years-old. 

The cause of death was not known and police had opened an inquest docket. 

The collapse happened around 03:00 on Sunday morning.
