Man murdered in Charlize's old house

2012-10-03 10:03

Johannesburg - A Benoni man has been murdered in the same house that actress Charlize Theron grew up in, The Star reported on Wednesday.

The Oscar-winning actress's mother Gerda shot her husband in self-defence in the same house in 1991.

The man, killed on Friday, Barry Newland, ran his business from the premises on Seventh Road, Rynfield. He repaired and sold cars.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nomsa Sekele said five robbers gained access to the property by pretending to be interested in viewing one of his girlfriend Joy Preft's cars.

The domestic workers had let them in. They tied Newland up when he got home. They put a plastic bag over his head and left him to suffocate.

The gardener and domestic worker were forced into another room and tied up.

Sekele said Newland was burnt with cigarettes and a clothes iron. Newland's friend Chris Ehlers denied this.

In 1991, Theron's mother shot her father when he came home drunk and threatened to kill mother and daughter with his shotgun. Gerda Theron was not prosecuted for the self-defence shooting.

Police said a cellphone was stolen during Friday's crime. Preft said a laptop, two cameras, an iPod and gold chain were also taken.

No arrests had been made and police were investigating.

Hunt the hoodlums, and kill them dead - 2012-10-03 11:04

These dark things moves in groups, mostly heavily armed and mostly attacks the old and defenseless, these barbaric things also have no respect for life, they enjoy it brutal cause their minds are dark and evil.

      rbphiri - 2012-10-03 11:53

This is the former house of the actress and this murder is full of DRAMA...hmmmm. I see a movie being made out of this. But jokes aside, if the president keeps implementing remission of sentence, will have more criminals out on the streets. YOU DO THE CRIME YOU DO THE WHOLE TIME!!!

  • logical007 - 2012-10-03 10:12

Just another day in the anc crime invested country . Anc voters going around and carrying out their masters orders.

      Paige Turner - 2013-10-29 15:45

Manto, the Freudian slip "crime invested" is a chilling turn of phrase. Thank you

  • acdcdclm - 2012-10-03 10:19

Now how the #$%@ can this be news worthy??????????

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-10-03 10:25

A man was tortured and murdered. In any normal country this would be the main news for weeks. Idiot.

      talita.vandermerwe - 2012-10-03 10:28

Is a murder not news worthy anymore?

      edward.d.beesley - 2012-10-03 10:33

I suppose you're referring to the Theron part, but as for the terrible death that Newlands suffered - tortured and suffocated??!!! Damn, anybody that is capable of doing this does not deserve to live - they are not human. We HAVE TO KILL THEM, and if the Death Penalty is not going to be reintroduced, then we have to do this ourselves (in this case a good place to start the investigation would be the domestics ...).

      hamish.drake1 - 2012-10-03 10:49

I think acdcdclm is refering to the Theron part of the story, not the murder itself.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-10-03 10:41

Actually it's country-wide in SA at the moment. Not good.

  • lungelo.yili - 2012-10-03 10:42

so this is news because it was Charlize's house? you guys are pathetic

      Mark - 2012-10-03 11:07

lungelo.yili you are pathetic for thinking a murder is not a news worthy story.

      harley.quin.334 - 2012-10-03 12:08

Sorry Mark have to agree with lungelo on this one, if it was just about murder why mention the fact it happend in charlize's old house, that was just to sex up the story, would it have been reported had it happened somewhere else?

  • koo.doyle - 2012-10-03 10:47

Dreadful story, poor man. However, this is about him, NOT the fact that Charlize once lived there. Shameful journalism.

  • richard.laros.77 - 2012-10-03 10:53

The mind boggles at how pathetic News24 "journalism" has become. The editor should be taken to task for allowing this pathetic slant on a tragic story. A person was murdered and the only thing newsworthy that the idiots at News24 can find in the story is that Charlize Theron used to live there. Seriously who cares who lived there? Charlize has long since ditched South Africa and adopted her fake Hollywood accent. Why South Africa still indulges her token visits amazes me. News24 should really pick there socks up.

lets be sensitive a man lost his life and there is nothing funny about that

  • andrew.mackie.90 - 2012-10-03 11:01

We live in a violent country where life is worth so little to thugs who murder for a few rand. Add to this a police force in disarray and a non performing government, not to mention a judiciary unable to cope and what do we get? Criminals who rob and murder at will.

  • Clayton Richard Delport - 2012-10-03 11:16

So he was murdered and tortured yet the domestics where tied up, bloody hell mr President when are you going to address this issue of racist murders, it's a sad time for south Africa, it seems the future prospects of a white minority living and working here is becoming less and less.....

  • rhett.davies.1 - 2012-10-03 11:19

Must be a slow news day...

  • ingrid.oberholzer - 2012-10-03 11:19

What posses a human to commit such a violent crime, what goes through their minds???? This is the norm in South Africa, one has more chance of getting brutally murdered that dying in a car accident. RIP dear citizen.

  • briana.scott - 2012-10-03 11:21

Really! that is the topic. who frikking cares that she lived in that house - shouldn't the main headline be aimed at the man who was Really! That is the hot topic, who frikking cares that she lived in that house - shouldn't the main headline be aimed at the man who was murdered, not that she lived there. This is what this country has become. We are so desensitised, it doesn't matter that someone was murdered; it is only headlines because some actress once lived there. I am appalled!

  • shawn.swiegers - 2012-10-03 11:34

So What if it happend in her old house! Disgusting using her reference and photo to degrade a man who was murdered! It reads like his death was a footnote to her living there once upon a time. Come on News24, that is just tastless.

  • obadia.segwape - 2012-10-03 11:34

send that house to MARIKANA SOMBLIEF

  • ben.l.johnson.7 - 2012-10-03 11:46

And?? What does that have to do with her? Jeeeez, anything to make a story hey

  • lielie.smit - 2012-10-03 12:14

We need to keep the fact that this horrible thing happened in her house a secret! She is telling the world she grew up on an African farm!!! Maybe she is confusing herself with KAren Blixon. oops. But seriously, another person had ty die needlesly to give the barbarians a kick for the day. Please, rot in hell. I can help you to get there sooner, just ask.

  • sagebrush.bush - 2012-10-03 12:22

No wonder decent people are leaving this country. Very few would leave if it was not for this mindless violence. I suppose the criminals could not care less whether that happens either.

  • adrienne.pretorius.1 - 2012-10-03 12:27

What has the significance of the house and Charlize got to do with it or anything! GOSH! Charlize must be SO embarressed by this!!

  • ettienec1 - 2012-10-03 13:10

Havent read the article, not going to, the headline is enough to bring this to mind... Who the fk cares? A guy got killed in JHB Central last night... If its news or so wierd or newsworthy that it was in some chicks house who is now an American, and you find it newsworthy, you have gone full retard!

  • bobby.boon.18 - 2012-10-03 14:12

I don’t care if it was the pope's old house the fact is another senseless murder doing time is not the solution... Locking them up is not a solution Seems like the only way we can deter these Criminals is by Returning the Favour and EYE FOR AN EYE....Take the matter into our own hands our Government is Clearly unwilling and Incapable to Control these animals A criminal loses his rights all his rights the moment he Takes the rights away from innocent people... Oh and you bleeding hearts wait until its you or your family will you help the criminal to commit the act hold his knife for him while he rapes your children?? Before he cuts their little necks and make you watch as they slowly bleed to death...!

    so effing what?

  • dean.benson.716 - 2012-10-03 14:39

This is shamefull --- what does the house or who lived there back in 1991 have to do with the sensless murder of Barry Newland. Barry was my friend, I kind hearted harmless man, with nothing more than laughter to be heard when around him. I hope the SAPS pull there fingers out of there behinds annd find the group that took him from all his friends and family in such terribble way. Something thatt is all to common in this country. For what a cellphone, laptop etc. My thoughts are with his family and friends alike. RIP Barry --- annd no you can't have anymore of my smokes... Lol (((xxx)))

  • michele.lavagna - 2012-10-03 14:57

The domestic worker let them in... Why was was Newland the one that was tortured and killed? The gardener and domestic worker were just tidied up in another room. Suspicious...!

We knew Barry for a very long time. Your comment has got no relevance. Your entitled to your opinion however he looked after and paid his helpers well. In fact he proberly kept them from off the streets. Half of South Africans lack basic education. After reading your comment it seems you are one of them... Your uninformed and should just go and catch up on some housework instead of tapping around your computer. You twat!

Something just doesn't fit right here. Five robbers suffocating a man locking up domestic workers? Burning the owner with cigarettes and taking laptop, cellphone and other stuff. Did they take the domestic workers phones also?

  • charmaine.paterson1 - 2012-10-03 22:13

It is so sad that we wouldn't have known about this murder if Charlize hadn't lived there once, probably twenty years ago.

  • riana.bruynslombard - 2012-10-04 08:45

How is the fact that it was Charlize's house relevant to the torture and murder of a fellow South African??? This is why I despise pony reporting!!
