Musina - Two men were arrested at the Beit Bridge border post with Zimbabwe after they allegedly transported more than R5m worth of ephedrine into the country, Limpopo police said.

"A dog handler from customs stopped the truck [on Tuesday] and after searching it, found a suspicious substance in a plastic bag," the police said.

"It was confiscated and tested positive for the substance. It weighed more than 14.5kg with a street value of more than R5m."

The two were expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

In South Africa, ephedrine is a Schedule 6 substance, which means a prescription is required to get any medication containing it.

Ephedrine, or pseudoephedrine, which is used in some cold and flu medications, can be used in the manufacture of crystal methamphetamine, or tik.

On Monday, customs officials at the OR Tambo airport seized 125.4kg of liquid methamphetamine, worth an estimated R37.6m.
