Hanekom wants Ramaphosa as president

2012-05-20 16:18

Johannesburg - Deputy minister of science and technology Derek Hanekom has asked businessman Cyril Ramaphosa to run for president, the City Press reported on Sunday.

"We need leaders of comrade Cyril's calibre. I know Cyril is very good at business, but I really wish he would put all his money in a trust and step up for a higher and more senior position," Hanekom said, hosting a panel discussion on the life of Walter Sisulu at the Wits Great Hall on Friday night.

"I'm not starting a succession debate here," Hanekom said when he realised how his comments could be interpreted, the City Press reported.

Parliamentary speaker Max Sisulu, ANC Gauteng secretary David Makhura, government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi and Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau were at the event, held under the auspices of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and the ANC in Gauteng.

"You can't read anything [into what he said]. He was joking," Ramaphosa told the newspaper.

So Malema was correct . The disciplinary committee members want to share the spoils .

      Squeegee - 2012-05-20 17:09

      Malema ... who?

      TSOTSI Smilification - 2012-05-20 22:12

      Press - 2012-05-21 01:05

Yes - we should rather have Malema than Cyril as President - after all most South Africans deperately wants the country to be destroyed . .

      Dave - 2012-05-21 05:31

Come on now umkhwetha stop making us laugh....Malema correct about anything would make me fall off my chair. But I will give you this much, you have a great sense of humor bud!

      Mark - 2012-05-21 09:01

Ramaphosa would actually make a brilliant president... he probably wouldn't want to get involved with the circus he would have to take over though....imagine having to deal with that on a daily basis..!!!!

  • Konanani - 2012-05-20 16:41

    Cyril,my role model

      Sharon - 2012-05-20 17:53

I second that, he has more brains than the ANC NEC put together.

      Konanani - 2012-05-20 18:11

Sharon ur right, the man have the brain of a leader

      Mark - 2012-05-20 19:50

Naah, I prefer Zuma - The longer he stays, the sooner this corrupt ANC clique will implode.

  • Bobo - 2012-05-20 16:45

How about BOBO For President !

      George - 2012-05-20 18:39

Yebo Bobo. Sorry, couldn't resist it!

      Bobo - 2012-05-21 20:44

      Thanks George !

  • Gladstone - 2012-05-20 16:45

Now you can see why these Zuma left you there to fire Julias. Now you're left with that dark spot of being the ones who fired our young leaders.

  • Morama - 2012-05-20 17:10

A big no,we don't want anyone from that elite to lead this country....actually we are fed up with ANC!!! Ramaphosa could had been after Mandela but because ethnicity rules in the Corrupt ANC,he was outsted by the choice of Nelson Mandela. From what i have learnt about this gravy brigade....they all sucks!!

      Yar - 2012-05-20 18:30

@Moron I can tell that you would only be happy with a mentally and morally underachiever.

  • Anele - 2012-05-20 17:11

You pretend as you love black people ,where is malema

  • Whitkath - 2012-05-20 17:12

I agree with Hanekom. I have always maintained that he is the right candidate for the job. Integrity and strong business acumen - exactly what we need at this stage.

  • ntjeke.wilfred - 2012-05-20 17:13

i will like Trevor Manuel to run for the president, but ey ANC is dirty than our prisons.

  • stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-05-20 17:16

I think someone like Cyril Ramaphosa could restore credibility to not only the ANC, but most importantly, to this country.

      Comrade - 2012-05-20 21:44

ZUMA or VOKOL,ANC LEAVES ANC LEADS,racists can't tell us who must lead in our backyard, back off

      Press - 2012-05-21 01:11

Dear Comrade - you are welcome to stuff up your backyard any which way you want - stay out of ours - the rest of us are trying to develop our backyards as integral parts of the big wide world . . .

      Stirer - 2012-05-21 06:11

I totally agree Stefan. There is no Mandela waiting in the wings, but I believe that Cyril is the next best thing. He is a man who LISTENS, and is a remarkable negotiator. He really stood out at CODESA. The only thing is that he would probably unite COSATU and the Commies again - a tripartite gouping which is bad for a true democracy. You need a strong opposition.

  • Lebzadikgetsi - 2012-05-20 17:17

The road to mangaung is becoming interesting

  • Morama - 2012-05-20 17:19

There's a motive behind this guy's speech,Anyway we all knew fro Polokwane conference that the shower head was just interim someone to oust Mbeki and he was not aware of it!!! If it can happen that he doesn't get re-elected in Mangaung we will see someone going to jail for all dropped charges!!!

  • Christopher - 2012-05-20 17:21

Hanekom can't play with south african mind cos secession debate is not open 4 cANCer.He must taken 2 account like he did to others. He mustn't think he bigger than the movement. What worries me is that'secession debate is open 4 others n other group not.

  • Lebzadikgetsi - 2012-05-20 17:25

Hanekom is a jackal in a sheep's skin

  • En - 2012-05-20 17:32

NEWS 24 maybe you should do a bit more research before copy pasting what City Press claims. I happened to be at Wits University at the time for a different matter, and decided to pop in and took a seat (was free entrance and I didn't know who the speakers were). Anyways....the word \president\ was not used in any way, shape or form. President of the PTA, president of the bowling club, president of the engineering council, president of the ANC or president of the country. President was not used anywhere near Derrick's statement. I'm not commenting on the contents of this article, but rather on the journalist who wrote it. Saying Hanekom said Cyril should be president is a clear and blatant lie on the part of the journalist. And then the media will act as if they're always innocent and are being unfairly attacked. Well at least my eyes have been opened....taking everything I read with an additional pinch of salt.

      George - 2012-05-20 18:48

Interesting. Thanks for those facts. Puts News24 in a slightly different light doesn't it.

  • les.cunningham1 - 2012-05-20 17:32

    Cyril for pres. !!! I agree 100%

  • Altyd - 2012-05-20 17:58

I doubt someone who's worth billions would be interested in running for president...

  • howard.komati - 2012-05-20 18:00

Ramaphosa is a Dictator we usually ignore who is running for Presidency just for the Organisation bt shld the ANC reconsider wht Hanekom has said, believe me if i see his face on the ballot box then ill vote for another party without hesitation. We cant vote for a man who has chased Malema for no apparent reason. If he becomes President he will rule wth a sword.

      Philimsomi - 2012-05-21 13:19

''no apparent reason'' ,are you completely fine?

  • Melanie - 2012-05-20 18:11

hanekom, pls leave vho malume wanga alone! U want his 'jewels' to be on display??

      salani.hurgovich - 2012-05-20 19:43

    Now you talking,nou praat jy.

  • George - 2012-05-20 18:37

There is nothing wrong with Helen Zille. What she's done for the Western Cape can be done for the country. Anyway, she should get once chance at it at least. Ramaphosa is a self serving opportunist like the rest of the cANCer society

      Comrade - 2012-05-20 21:48

Maybe she can best do it in holland, here in azania Msholozi is in charge

  • Henry - 2012-05-20 18:50

I'm also not opening a succession battle (as I'm not interested in politics anyway) if I had to comment and choose, ti would be fair for him to be given a chance. He's been a lawyerby practice fo quite some time, he is not a newcomer to politcs and so on. I honestly though, don't have anything againt our current president, Mr Zuma.

  • George - 2012-05-20 18:53

Trevor Manual is the secret weapon to guarantee this regime stays in power. He is a man of integrity and has served the country as Minister of Finance with skill. He can common respect and allegiance from all sectors of the population. Will they be selfless enough to field him as the next President.

      Xulu.Thulany.Xaba - 2012-05-20 23:17

True as much as I like JZ bt he shouldn't stand 4 next 2nd term! Trevor 4 president

      Xulu.Thulany.Xaba - 2012-05-20 23:18

True as much as I like JZ bt he shouldn't go 4 2nd term! Trevor 4 president

      Comrade - 2012-05-20 21:50

What king maker?maybe you have not taken your medication

  • Psy4genic.Mgcwaba - 2012-05-20 21:56

Cyril Ramaphosa...interesting. I like the idea of him being the President, he seems like a level headed individual with a very good reputation.

  • Orapeleng Edgar Monnaoapula - 2012-05-20 22:46

that will definitely come as a relief...ons is moeg ke JZ nd his scandals nd potraits

  • keith.ngobeni - 2012-05-21 00:54

Yeah Cyril ramaphosa is much better than most of his crooks friends at the ANC and he uses more of his brains not his penis, unlike his boss JZ and fikile mbalula and ooh wanted to forget malusi gigaba.

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-05-21 01:42

    Cyril won't make it...he ain't a crook!!

      Zama - 2012-05-21 07:01

What is the difference between Mbeki and Posa, guess what? No difference and now you guys you must think, Presidents office is just a super fame on business peoples not for living.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-21 06:53

We need a president that is not beholden to any political party. Someone like Redi.

  • nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-05-21 08:25

yes yes Ramaphosa for President, better than, criminal corrupt Zuma & lying snake Sexwale.

  • Mark - 2012-05-21 09:24

ya now we see what happened in malema's case. ramaphosa was promised a leadership support if he upheld all the decisions that were made by the ndc. i sincerely hope the branches are looking at this closely so that they can remove these thieves. after mangaung, the anc needs a very good leader to redeem the party. I am thinking of Jeff Rhadebe. What do you guys think? Not Motlante nor Tokyo (they are both compromised).

  • gailcarolynhayes - 2012-05-21 09:54

Sadly Mr Hanekom, Cyril is able to run his own business and does not wish to be told how to run a country by abunch of uneducated unimaginative comrades or be tarred with the same brush as them. The incumbent has to WANT to be the figurehead for an ailing and failing party which has done nothing but make us the laughing stock of the rest of the world.

  • DrGonzoSA - 2012-05-21 11:20

Cyril is the right man for the job without a doubt. Unfortunately he has more sense than to get involved in the circus
