Cape Town - Former Proteas skipper Graeme Smith believes that Morne Morkel will be key to dismantle India's powerhouse batting line-up.

Morkel was the only standout performer with the ball for the Proteas in their loss to Pakistan.

He delivered superb figures of 3/18 in his seven overs before the rain handed Pakistan victory.

Smith highlighted Morkel's performance as the only positive to come out of the game and praised his ability to take charge of "commendable" Pakistani side.

"A positive from my point of view was to see the form Morne Morkel is in with the ball," Smith wrote in his ICC column.

"When he's in that mood and finds his rhythm, he can be one of the most dangerous strike bowlers in the game. He has that ability to take a game by the scuff of the neck and make something happen."

South Africa now face India in their final Group B clash at The Oval on Sunday with the winning team advancing through to the semi-finals.

Smith believes that Morkel will be key against Virat Kohli and his men, as the Proteas look to secure their second ICC Champions Trophy title.

"His (Morkel) form could be key against India's formidable batting powerhouse," said Smith.

"South Africa will know where they need to improve and have a few days to focus on what is now a hugely important game on Sunday."

The Proteas take on India on Sunday at the Oval (11:30 SA time).
