Poor crowd stats don't lie...

Cape Town - Much has been written about the poor crowd attendance at both the Wanderers and Kingsmead for the two-Test India series - and rightly so!

When India insisted on a shortened Test series against the Proteas, Cricket South Africa (CSA) obliged and handed those Tests to the Wanderers in Johannesburg and Kingsmead in Durban.

Newlands in Cape Town - SA's best-supported stadium by some distance - staggeringly missed out.

The poor crowd turnout was at times lost in the confusion of the Proteas electing not to go for what would've been a world record fourth innings successful chase on Day 5 of the first Test and Jacques Kallis' Test retirement following the Durban match.

Crowd stats aren't available for the Wanderers (it wasn't that high), but the 20 000-strong Kingsmead wasn't exactly bulging at the seams with  these figures confirmed by the Cricinfo website:

Kingsmead:

Day 1: 13 581
Day 2: 4 752
Day 3: 4 736
Day 4: 7 017
Day 5: 7 258

TOTAL: 37 344

Contrast those figures with the numbers that turned out at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for the dead fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England - which only lasted four days...

Day 1: 91 092
Day 2: 78 346
Day 3: 63 864
Day 4: 38 563

TOTAL: 271 865

Just a reminder of the venues for the upcoming SA v Australia three-Test series:

February 12-16: SuperSport Park, Centurion
February 20-24: St George's Park, Port Elizabeth
March 1-5, Newlands, Cape Town
