Cape Town - It appears as though a sore tooth sparked Vernon Philander into action as his efforts kept the Proteas in the game against India in the first Test at the Wanderers on Thursday.

After the first day's play on Wednesday, Philander revealed his frustrations via his official Twitter account.

He said: Toothache..... you are starting to Annoy the shit out of me now......

24 hr dentist where are you? Sandton

In whatever way he handled the problem seems to have worked as he came out fired-up on Thursday morning, helping South Africa quickly dismiss India before later saving the day with the bat.

He took 4/61 as the Indians collapsed from 264/5 to 280 all out.

Philander now has 99 Test wickets and should he get another in India's second innings, he will become the fastest South African to the landmark, reaching it in 19 Tests, one fewer than Dale Steyn.

But Philander's job was not done as he also saved South Africa with the bat following a top-order collapse. The Proteas went from 130/1 to 146/6 before Philander and Faf du Plessis steadied the ship.

Philander is on 48 not out and Du Plessis on 17, with the hosts still trailing by 67 runs.

There's no doubt Philander was South Africa's man-of-the-day on Thursday.

Lets hope he still had toothache on Thursday night...
