Cape Town - Qaasim Adams blasted his way to the fastest fifty in South African domestic List A cricket before the Momentum One-Day Cup Jukskei derby between the Titans and the Highveld Lions ended in a no-result because of inclement weather in Centurion on Wednesday.

Adams raced to his half-century off just 20 balls as the Titans posted 240/6 off 35 overs after the match had been reduced to a 35-over per-side game following a lengthy rain delay during the home team’s innings.

The Lions were then set a Duckworth/Lewis adjusted total of 255 for victory and they responded with 74/1 off 10.1 overs before the teams were forced from the field by first lightning and then more rain with no further play possible.

The highlight of the abandoned game was undoubtedly Adams’ innings as he plundered 3 fours and 5 sixes with his half-century one ball faster than the previous record of 21, held by four other batsmen.

Adams was out for an even 50, a ball after reaching his half-century, while there were useful contributions from most of the Titans’ batting line-up with six other players reaching double figures.

Seamer Pumelela Matshikwe, with 2/44, and left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin, with 2/50, were the Lions’ most successful bowlers.

The Johannesburg side, after the early loss of Stephen Cook, made a good fist of their run chase thanks to an unbroken second-wicket stand of 74 off just 9.5 overs between Rassie van der Dussen (33 not out) and the in-form Alviro Petersen (37 not out).

However, the poor weather won out in the end despite the match seeming to be finely poised.

The result of the match was only of academic value as the Lions had already secured second place on the log and home advantage in next Wednesday’s Qualifier against the Warriors.

The Titans end the season rooted to the bottom of the table, on 15 points, one behind the fifth-placed Sunfoil Dolphins.
