Cape Town - Proteas batsman Hashim Amla has made himself available for consideration to become South Africa's next Test captain, the ESPNcricinfo website reports.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is looking for a successor to Graeme Smith, who retired from international cricket earlier this year.

Amla, 31, who had earlier stated he is not available for the captaincy role, appears to have had a change of heart after informing CSA's selection panel.

This brings the number of candidates to be considered for the role to four.

AB de Villiers appears to be the favourite, while Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy are also believed to be in the running.

CSA will name the new Proteas captain early next month.
