Cape Town - The Proteas are likely to be without the services of opening batsman Hashim Amla for the second Test against Pakistan in Dubai.

According to the Volksblad website, Amla's wife is due to give birth which could see him return to South Africa and therefore miss the second Test, which starts on October 23.

The Proteas will depart for Dubai on Friday, and start their tour with a three-day game against Pakistan A in Sjarjah next Tuesday.

The first Test starts in Abu Dhabi on October 14, while there will also be five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games.

The loss of Amla for the second and final Test could be a big blow to the world's No 1 team, as Amla currently occupies the No 1 ranking in both Tests and ODIs.

Dean Elgar is likely to fill in should Amla return home.
