Cape Town - Graeme Smith has urged fans to come to cricket grounds to support the Proteas during Australia's upcoming tour in SA.

Smith took to Twitter to convey his message to Proteas fans:

"I understand people back at work/school but really hope people turn out in droves and put their weight behind SA cricket next month!"

His message comes at a time when South African cricket is on the precipice, as the No 1 ranked Test team could face playing predominantly against minnows in future under a possible, commercial superpower-engineered new dispensation for the global game.

The poor crowd attendance at both the Wanderers and Kingsmead for the two-Test India series late last year was an embarrassment for South African cricket.

The crowd attendance at Kingsmead over all five days was less than the worst attended single day of the Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

This, despite the fact that the Test series in SA was between the top-two nations in the current ICC standings and the fact that it was the final chance to see arguably South Africa's greatest ever cricketer, Jacques Kallis, in action.

Both Test matches featured exciting cricket and matches that came down to the wire on the final day.

Tour Itinerary:

First Test: February 12-16 - SuperSport Park, Centurion
Second Test: February 20-24 - St Georges, Port Elizabeth
Third Test: March 1-5 - Newlands, Cape Town
