Cape Town - Proteas bowling coach Allan Donald says frontline bowler Dale Steyn will be carefully managed in the near future.

Steyn was on Wednesday chosen as Wisden's Leading Cricketer in the World for 2013, a year in which he took 51 Test wickets in only nine games at an average of 17.

Donald said the well-being of the 30-year-old Steyn is of utmost importance to the national team and they'll make sure he is not over-played.

"Russell (Domingo, SA coach) has already spoken to him and outlined his programme. We'll have to take good care of him because he is the leader of our pack," Donald told the Volksblad website.

Donald, who was one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year in 1992, lauded Steyn for his achievements.

"The consistency Dale has displayed over the last few years was an example for all. He's won us a lot of games."

Steyn became only the second South African in the last 40 years to win the prestigious award. Jacques Kallis won it in 2007 and the last South African before that was Barry Richards in 1973.
