If Dean Elgar, who now stands out as one of very few viable Test captaincy candidates for the Proteas, wants to take up the role, Allan Border's career will serve as an example to follow.

Border wasn't a natural leader and his first three years as captain were tough.

He crawled so Australia could walk and then run under Mark Taylor and then eventually sprint ahead of everyone else under Steve Waugh.
