Cape Town - Proteas captain, Faf du Plessis, moved to within five runs of a well deserved century at tea on the second day of the second Test against New Zealand in Pretoria.

Du Plessis and Stiaan van Zyl shared an 84 run partnership that came at a healthy run-rate of 3.25 before van Zyl fell to Neil Wagner, caught in the slips by Ross Taylor.

The big left-armer was the pick of the bowlers for the Black Caps, taking 4/76 in 33 overs.

Earlier, the Proteas started the day on 283/3.

Du Plessis (58*) and JP Duminy started off slowly, seeing off the second new ball before Duminy fell for 88 wafting at a slower bouncer from Tim Southee.

Temba Bavuma joined du Plessis and just when they looked ready to build a substantial partnership, Bavuma fell to another short ball, this time from Wagner.
