Elgar: That was amazing to watch

Cape Town - If it was difficult to watch for South African supporters, one can only imagine what was going through the minds of the 11 Proteas on the field as they witnessed Ben Stokes send their bowling attack to all corners of Newlands.

Stokes' demolition job saw him blast his way to 258 off 198 balls in an majestic 399-run sixth wicket partnership with Jonny Bairstow (150*), and the Proteas had no answers.

Opening batsman Dean Elgar, who was out for 44 in the Proteas reply, offered some insight as to what it was like watching Stokes' knock.

"Funny enough, it wasn't a very long day out there. It was just a very intense session and a half by Bairstow and Stokes, which was quite amazing to watch from where I was standing," said Elgar.

"I was standing at the boundary quite a few times and fetching balls ... it was a crazy day of cricket."

Despite England eventually declaring on 629/6, Elgar had encouraging words for a bowling attack that had four centurions of its own in Kagiso Rabada (3/175), Morne Morkel (1/114), Chris Morris (1/150) and Dane Piedt (0/112).

"I must give our bowling attack a massive amount of credit," said Elgar.

"Whatever our captain asked for, the bowlers put their hands up and threw it at them. We had various different gameplans against the guys to try and get them out, but it's one of those days where you just have to take your cap off and say 'well done, you won the battle'.

"I can't fault our bowlers at all ... it was just one of those days of cricket that hopefully doesn't get repeated againt us."

Elgar also credited Stokes' risky approach.

"He seems to be one of those cricketers that chances his arm quite a bit, it's the way he plays his game. But massive credit to him, today it came off," said Elgar.

"I think this morning he came out positive and aggressive and it could have gone to hand and we'd be sitting here with a different story to write tomorrow morning."
