Cape Town - Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis admits that playing against Australia always brings out the best in his side.

The Proteas departed for Australia on Tuesday, where they will play in three ODIs and a T20I.

This will be the first time the two teams go head-to-head following Australia's controversial Test tour to South Africa in March.

The tour saw former Australian captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and opening batsman Cameron Bancroft plead guilty to ball-tampering.

The trio were handed subsequent bans from Cricket Australia and are only allowed to play international or franchise cricket for Australia next year.

Tim Paine has been appointed as captain of the Australian side, while former Australian batsman Justin Langer has taken over as coach after Darren Lehmann's resignation after the SA series.

Du Plessis told reporters on Tuesday that he is excited to play in the hostile environment in Australia.

"Australia is our favourite team to play against, all the stuff that comes with playing them, on and off the field, I love that and I feel that brings the best out of us as a team," said Du Plessis, as quoted by Reuters.

"It will be nice and hostile. We are not expecting anything less. Zunaid our security officer has been working hard in the gym.

"We expect them to try and unsettle us as a team when it comes to the media space, obviously with myself being at the forefront of it, but we see it as part and parcel of touring Australia," said Du Plessis.

"I do think this time round there may be one or two more traps for the players to try and stay away from. At the end of the day we want to go there and play a brand of winning cricket."

Proceedings get under way in the first ODI in Perth on Sunday, November 4.
