Apart from being in a near-unprecedented phase of cross-format series defeats and generally bad results, the South African national men’s cricket team has been in a severe state of flux in selection terms.

Sorting out the latter as swiftly as possible is necessary to curb the former.

While it is galling to lose any home series to a similarly mid-level sort of power like Pakistan – they leave our shores having completed a novel white-ball double of ODI and Twenty20 series success – the Proteas’ situation is perhaps not quite as lamentable as it may seem.
