The Proteas lead could have been larger, but an excellent rearguard action by Moeen Ali - last out for 61 - ensured England didn't concede as big a lead as it once looked like they might after Rabada's morning heroics.

Ali first put on a 41 run partnership with Ben Stokes followed by 43 with Chris Woakes.

The England all-rounder managed to keep much of the strike in the final two partnerships of the innings, adding a further 25 runs for the ninth wicket with Broad and then 22 with James Anderson.

The day however belonged to Rabada who now has 18 wickets in six Tests at an average of 31.16.
