The decorated former Proteas wicketkeeper/batsman is effectively the leader of a leaking, listing South African vessel at present... and with an increasingly callow crew trying desperately to bail out the water.

On the plus side for him in the volatile climate, he probably still has reason to feel relatively safe in his hot seat at present.

These are highly transitional times for the Proteas, something his most direct, relevant employers will not be unaware of: a landmine-laden path at this point of development was always on the cards - regardless of how gifted an overseer might be presiding over the team's fortunes.
