Cape Town - Although it could only happen in early 2018, South Africans appear open to the idea of Kevin Pietersen representing the Proteas.

Pietersen is currently 35-years-old and he would be 37 by the time he would be eligible to play for South Africa, something that former England bowler Darren Gough thinks he would be keen to do.

Under ICC rules, once a player has represented a Test-playing country, he must wait four years to re-qualify for another side.

Sport24 conducted an online poll on both our Twitter page and website, and the results made for some interesting reading.

Well over 1 000 votes were cast, and the results revealed that 63% of the participants wanted to see 'KP' in Proteas colours while 37% were firmly against the idea.

Pietersen last played Test cricket for England on January 3, 2014, after which he was dropped from the team and told he would not be picked in future.

He remains England's all-time leading run scorer across all formats.
