Cape Town - It was one of the most intriguing draws you are likely to see, so it is fitting that the second Test between South Africa and England attracted record crowds at Newlands.

A total of 85 280 spectators attended the Test which ended on Wednesday.

That figure, according to Cricket South Africa (CSA), breaks the previous record at Newlands when 83 820 spectators attended the 2005 New Year's Test, also against England.

South Africa won that match by 196 runs.

A temporary stand, accommodating an additional 2 000 people, was erected at Newlands for this year's Test and that took the capacity at the ground beyond 22 500.

Tickets were sold out for the first two days of the match, despite the attendances for those days being just over 20 000.

Attendance figures for Newlands Test:

Day 1 - 20 195

Day 2 - 20 600

Day 3 - 17 558

Day 4 - 16 261

Day 5 - 10 666

TOTAL - 85 280
