Cape Town - South African U19 captain Raynard van Tonder had equalled former Proteas skipper Graeme Smith's record at the U19 World Cup.

Van Tonder scored 82* (99b, 7x4, 2x6) as his side overpowered Bangladesh by eight wickets to secure fifth place in this year's tournament in New Zealand.

In the process, Van Tonder took his overall tally to 348 runs scored for the tournament, seeing him equal Smith as the third-highest South African run scorer at an U19 World Cup.

Smith achieved that number in 2000, when he got his runs at an average of 87 and a strike rate of 79.27.

Aiden Markram's return of 370 runs in 2014 is the second-most by a South African at an U19 World Cup, while Dominic Hendricks' 391 runs in 2010 at an average of 97.75 is the best return by a South African.

Now 27, Hendricks has never cashed in on being the tournament's leading run scorer that year and he is yet to be capped by the Proteas at senior level.

Van Tonder, meanwhile, scored two centuries and one half-century in New Zealand. He will be hoping that he doesn't follow in Hendricks' footsteps.

Raynard van Tonder's U19 World Cup:

v Kenya - 143 (121)

v West Indies - 0 (2)

v New Zealand - 2 (8)

v Pakistan - 4 (10)

v New Zealand - 117 (129)

v Bangladesh - 82* (99)
