Cape Town - A return to fitness and international cricket could be just around the corner for Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn.

The 34-year-old has not played since the first Test against Australia in Perth back in November 2016 where he triggered a shoulder injury that his plagued the last couple of years of his career.

A long period of rehabilitation has followed, and given his age there were many who felt that a return to the Proteas set-up was unlikely.

Proteas Test captain Faf du Plessis even commented last week that it would be a tall order for Steyn to return to the side, especially given that he will likely not bowl at the same pace he did in years past.

But the 'Phalaborwa Express', as he is fondly known, dropped a massive hint on Thursday that he is ready to play again.

Posting a picture of himself celebrating a wicket with his trademark fist-pump, Steyn took to Instagram to deliver a simple message: "The wait is over."

The Proteas take on Bangladesh in two Test matches in September and October, and Steyn will likely be eyeing a return for those clashes.

If he does play in those two Tests, he will likely claim the five wickets he needs to overtake Shaun Pollock as South Africa's all-time leading wicket-taker in Test cricket.

Steyn currently has 417 scalps to his name from 85 Tests, while Pollock finished with 421 wickets from 108 Tests.

The wait is over. ????
