Cape Town - Proteas great Dale Steyn announced his retirement from red ball cricket on Monday, bringing the curtain down on a stellar Test career.

Steyn took 439 wickets in 93 Tests, making him the leading all-time Proteas Test wicket-taker of all time.

He will continue to be available for ODI and T20I selection.

Steyn was ranked as the No 1 Test bowler for a record 263 weeks between 2008 and 2014 and won the ICC's Test Cricketer of the Year award in 2008 and was one of Wisden's cricketers of the year in 2013.

In his 93 Tests, Steyn bowled a total of 18 608 balls and conceded 10 077 runs. His best innings figures were 7-51 and his best match analysis read 11-60.

He took his 439 scalps at an average of 22.95 and at an economy rate of 3.24.

Steyn took 26 five-for's and a 10-for in five Tests.

Perhaps Steyn's greatest spell of fast bowling took place against Pakistan at the Wanderers back in 2013 when the 'Phalaborwa Express' picked up his best-ever 11-60 figures - broken down into 6-8 and 5-52 - as the Proteas romped to a 211-run victory.
