Pretoria - The Highveld Lions brushed aside their disappointing performance in the One-Day Cup to take firm control of their Sunfoil Series clash against the Titans at SuperSport Park on Thursday.

Stephen Cook’s 113 was the obvious highlight as the Lions posted 328 for five after they were put in to bat by the Titans, while Temba Bavuma also made a welcome return to form as he struck 88.

Cook’s gritty knock ensured that the Titans were forced to toil, as the Lions skipper put on a 172-run stand for the second wicket with Bavuma to bring the home side’s decision to bowl first into question.

The Titans managed just one wicket in the first session and one in the second, which came when Roelof van der Merwe had Bavuma stumped by Mangaliso Mosehle.

Cook went to his 24th first-class hundred shortly after tea as he and Neil McKenzie put on a further 70 runs for the third wicket, before the Lions lost three wickets in four overs.

First McKenzie pulled a short ball from Henry Davids straight to square leg to depart for 34, and then the second new ball accounted for Cook and Zander de Bruyn.

Ethy Mbhalati claimed the big wicket of Cook by trapping him lbw, and was the standout bowler for the Titans with his 2 for 52.

After the brief flurry of wickets, Thami Tsolekile and Brett Pelser steadied the Lions knock and went to stumps unbeaten on 16 and 20 respectively.
